Reefing Hook

I wanted an easier way to reef - there seemed to be a lot of sliding and tugging on the reefing line to get both the tack and the clew down to the boom using only the one line.

There are a number of solutions to this common problem on all sailboats. I thought I would try a reefing hook.

This is a Dwyer Mast Part #DH 680 attached to the WR stock 1/4" bolt going through gooseneck.

The Ring-pin used for normal sail tack position.

When it is time to reef, the ring-pin is removed (put a lanyard on that thing!), and the tack of the sail is brought down and hooked into the hook.

The halyard pulls upward and keeps the cringle in the hook.

I don't have a picture (I may try to make a drawing later), but I left the reefing line in place to use with the clew reef point.

It still runs from the clew, down to the boom, through the turning block, and then forward to the same cleat as before.

The difference is that the same line doesn't have to pull down on the tack cringle at the same time.
